BACKGROUND: The current Furuno Felcom based Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is over 15-years-old and outdated, relying on 3¼ inch floppy disks for data storage. It is time for an upgrade to this system, both due to its age and increasing difficulty in finding replacement parts. 2. OBJECTIVES: Procurement of an Iridium LT-3100S GMDSS system to replace current Furuno Felcom based GMDSS. 3. SCOPE: The Iridium LT-3100S provides all three satellite GMDSS services: Distress Alert, Safety Voice, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI). Distress alerts and safety calls can be initiated quickly with a dedicated one-button operation. It provides maximum coverage using Iridium’s 66 cross-linked LEO satellites to provide reliable global coverage, including Area3 which is required for the Lasker’s operations. Being a satellite-based system, it replaces the requirement for a MF/HF radio system and combines SASS, LRIT, and VOIP communications into one system reducing overall maintenance and multi-equipment requirements. 4.
